Marcus Samuelsson Visits Hot Stove Society!

Marcus Samuelsson, the Ethiopian-born, Swedish-raised, NY-based chef stopped in Seattle last week to promote his new book, Marcus Off Duty: The Recipes I Cook at Home

Along with Tom Douglas, Marcus demoed a few recipes from his cookbook, like leftover spaghetti frittata and crab fried rice. As he demoed, he told us stories from Ethiopia (and his traditional wedding there), how he scouts the best food while he’s on vacation (like jerk chicken in Jamaica), his pantry essentials like toasted rice flour that he uses for everything, and trends he sees in the food industry. Everyone received a signed copy of his book, drank wine, and snacked on the tasty food he demoed.

Marcus was exciting and humble, trendy but also traditional (he spent many years in a French kitchen), and very eager to share his recipes and tips. His new book is a fun collection of all the things he enjoys cooking at home in Harlem, and pays homage to his wide set of influences from Ethiopia to Sweden to New York. We hope to see him again in Seattle soon!
