Food Photography

We were excited to snag professional photographer Sarah Flotard and talk her into offering a second food photography class for us. On last Saturday afternoon, after a lecture and side show at Hot Stove Society, Sarah and her classmates, toting their cameras, tripods and iphones, trooped over to TanakaSan to set themselves up for a photo shoot. TanakaSan has big windows and an outdoor patio, so it was the perfect place for providing lots of natural light.

TanakaSan cooks prepared gorgeously delectable plates of food including burgers and fries, big bowls of ramen, beautifully arranged Bento boxes, crispy chicken wings, and assorted dumplings for us to use in the photo shoot.

The classmates learned how to compose a shot, how to take advantage of the light, how to energize a food photo by adding human interest, and how to get a fresh angle on things by staging your food on the floor and shooting from above!

Sarah is always percolating new ideas, and we can’t wait to welcome her back to Hot Stove Society for another photography lesson!

Photo note: In the group of 4 photos, the photos of Katie O eating ramen, Leslie Kelly eating a burger, and the composed shot of TanakaSan food including steamer basket of dumplings are by Sarah Flotard.
